When we first heard that Whole Foods planned to stock rabbit meat in its stores, we at the Animals' Battalion were enraged. We signed the petition and stopped shopping at Whole Foods immediately. There are vegan options everywhere where one can get vegetables as long as they are not a slave to vegan comfort foods. Soon, protests against Whole Foods started appearing nationwide. A local rabbit rescue group, NYC Metro Rabbits AKA Rabbit Rescue & Rehab, wanted to protest. The Animals' Battalion, whose forte is street protests, jumped to their side.
The Animals' Battalion and activists in California set up a Facebook page, Stop Butchering Bunnies Whole Foods, wherein people would upload their receipts from competitors to use the most powerful weapon we have (our wallets) to effect change for animals.
It is important to understand that how many vegan options a retailer offers is irrelevant when it is simultaneously pushing carnism. All the positive effects of offering vegan comfort foods is negated when a retailer encourages their customers to buy more obscure meat products such as foie gras, turtle soup or certain rare fish. Take a closer look at Whole Foods and you will see that is exactly what it does. Chicken grilling demos? We won't tell you where to shop, but we will tell you to open your eyes.
After waging a campaign that lasted a little over a year, Whole Foods pulled rabbit meat from its shelves. The Animals' Battalion is proud that it joined this campaign and spearheaded efforts in NYC. We are honored that we stood side by side with rabbit rescuers, many of whom we have developed strong lasting friendships with. We had no way of knowing a victory would come quickly; we joined the fight because it was the right thing to do. We endorse single issue campaigns because many of them are WINNABLE. The rabbit is an unfortunate victim of various forms of animal abuse. They are eaten, killed by the fur trade, and vivisected. Many of the rabbit rescuers are vegan. More importantly, we have several accounts of people who went vegan during this campaign.
Many animal rights groups and activists thumbed their noses at this campaign since it focused on one species. These snobs did NOTHING to contribute to getting a victory for the rabbits.
